Yes, people LAUGH! at Ian’s highly irreverent commentary (they laughed at Columbus) – but the shocking truth is exposed at last, as Ian’s expatiation explicitly explains the unexpurgated action! Well… it’s not really explicit at all. In case you’re concerned, you will be relieved, or maybe disappointed, to know that the program is G rated, appropriate for anyone of any age, (bring the kids; they can explain anything you don’t understand), there is no nudity, (Ian doesn’t want to catch a cold), and there is no bad language, (the opera with the “F” word is La Forza del destino).
Along the way, Ian will bring down the house with favorite arias from operas about sex, drugs, & violence.

I am occasionally asked which is my favorite opera. Without question the answer is Puccini’s Il Tabarro because it enables me to fulfill the dream of every baritone. I get to strangle the tenor!
My least favorite: Puccini’s Tosca. In this dark tragedy I portray the hero, the noble, fun loving Baron Scarpia. The dark tragedy, of course, is that when I try to rape the soprano the %!+¢# kills me. Heck, I was just trying to have a good time, but she, like so many sopranos, has no sense of humor and doesn’t know how to have fun. And dying in the second act means I don’t get a big aria in the third act. It’s no fair! But there is an upside. Dying in the second act means I get to go home early.

MASTER CLASSES
Ian Geller conducts master classes in opera and art song repertoire for festivals and schools. The student will prepare and perform music and Dr. Geller will comment on the interpretation and the performance in all of its various aspects. Topics discussed and practiced range from acting in recital/opera/play/musical theater, characterization, stance, gestures, pronunciation, diction, inflections, and color of text, tone color, musical dynamics, phrasing, tempo, rhythmic accuracy, accentuation within the vocal line, style, entrances, exits, bowing, and indeed, everything concerning a fine performance. It is understood that, although young students often lack the vocal technique, maturity, and development to render perfectly many of the demands of artistic performance, these master classes will expose them to the ideas which, later on in their education, they will be able to perform well.
In addition to the schools where he served as a faculty member, Dr. Geller has also given master classes at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, OK.

Ian Geller has sung hundreds of art songs of all the great song composers. His performances of music of J. S. Bach, Händel, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, R. Strauss, Schoenberg, Webern, Fauré, Duparc, Bartók, Barber, Ives, his own works, and music of many other composers have won him ecstatic reviews here and abroad.

How is Chelm pronounced?
In Yiddish, Chelm rhymes with elm preceded by a CH, sounding as if one were preparing to spit: [xεlm]. In classical Polish the CH is softer, and the L or l is actually the Ł or ł with a stroke and sounds similar to the English W: [xεUm].

Why is Chelm a great city?
Because according to Jewish folklore, the Jews of Chelm are all fools! The Yiddish expression, Chelmer chocham, literally, wise man of Chelm, denotes a fool.
Why Chelm?
Who knows! Surely its citizens are no more foolish than everyone else in the world. But many droll stories about the fools of Chelm have been told and retold by many storytellers and authors for well over a century.
Why Ian created CHELM!
Ian has enjoyed a love affair with Jewish folklore and music for as long as he can remember. He was born in Chicago into a family of musicians and by age ten he was singing professionally as a boy soprano in a Jewish High Holy Day choir. He would spend hours reading folk tales about the colorful denizens of the Jewish shtetls, or villages of Europe in the nineteenth century (often when he should have been doing his homework). Through these stories he became intimate with characters who have disappeared forever outside of folklore.
The tales about Chelm,
city of fools, were particularly fascinating because, as he grew up, he became aware that he actually knew real adult grown-

Thus, CHELM! was born!
In creating CHELM!
Ian was inspired by the immortal words of Rabbi Levi Yitzchok Lochinkopf, the distinguished Rabbi of Chelm: “As you journey through life you will come to a great fork in the road, and when you come to that great fork in the road, you must take it!”
When CHELM!
opened in Chicago it won standing ovations and bravos, along with rave reviews (see way below).

ABOUT CHELM!
Chaim Yankel is a leading citizen of Chelm. A man of great wisdom, he hears of the wonders of Warsaw and determines to visit that city. On the way he is accidentally turned around and ends up back in Chelm. Believing he is in Warsaw, he becomes convinced that Warsaw and Chelm are identical! Need I say that on his way back he is once again turned around and once again ends up in Chelm. He has some amazing adventures along the way, and learns one of the great mystical secrets of the universe! (We can’t tell the secret here. You will have to find out for yourself. Besides, you wouldn’t believe it if we told you anyway)!

THE WISDOM OF RABBI LEVI YITZCHOK LOCHINKOPF
A man approached Rabbi Levi Yitzchok Lochinkopf as he sat discussing Torah and Talmud with his disciples.
THE MAN: Rabbi, you are known for your kindness and beneficence. I would like to make known to you and to your assemblage the desperate situation of a certain widow with eight children. Her husband just died leaving her penniless. She has nothing, and she will be evicted from her home with her children tomorrow afternoon if she does not come up with the money to pay her rent. Imagine, the poor old widow, homeless, thrown out on the street with eight children.
RABBI LEVI YITZCHOK LOCHINKOPF: How terrible!
The Rabbi and all the disciples reached into their pockets for the few groschen they had, for although they were poor, they were also generous. The rabbi offered what they collected to the man.
RABBI LEVI YITZCHOK LOCHINKOPF: How good of you to concern yourself with this act of charity. How did you come to take an interest in this unfortunate widow?
THE MAN: I am her landlord.

Rabbi Levi Yitzchok Lochinkopf was discussing a matter of great importance with the leading citizens of Chelm when suddenly, the door of the synagogue opened and a woman entered. Everyone turned and looked with amazement. The woman was Claudette, the town prostitute!
CLAUDETTE: Rabbi, I have never given anything to the synagogue. I would like to make a donation.
RABBI LEVI YITZCHOK LOCHINKOPF: I thank you very much for your generosity.
As Claudette left, Reb Berele Bólszyckowic turned to the rabbi.
REB BERELE BÓLSZYCKOWIC: Rabbi, do you know who that is? She is a woman of ill repute! How can you take HER money?
RABBI LEVI YITZCHOK LOCHINKOPF: You are absolutely right. I would never touch her money. But this is YOUR money!

A man came to Rabbi Levi Yitzchok Lochinkopf for advice.
THE FATHER: Rabbi, please advise me. I just became the father of a beautiful little baby girl and I do not know what to name her.
RABBI LEVI YITZCHOK LOCHINKOPF: According to tradition, the child is named in memory of a deceased relative, perhaps a parent or grandparent or aunt or uncle, or brother or sister, someone deceased.
THE FATHER: But Rabbi, my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, all my relatives are alive.
RABBI LEVI YITZCHOK LOCHINKOPF: Oh, that’s too bad.
