Lahr (sm).  Ian Geller did not originally intend to make singing his main profession. Fortunately, he changed his mind because, otherwise, one would not have had the chance to experience and hear the American baritone in Lahr.  Ian Geller and his piano accompanist, Rainer Gepp, upon the invitation of the Cultural Society of Lahr, presented a song recital last Saturday in the Stiftsschaffneikeller which was incredible; To describe the program and the main performer as versatile would be simple understatement.  

 

After hearing the concert, it is not surprising that Geller has been praised as one of the leading baritones of his country: Stylistic variety and breadth coincide here in an ideal manner together with a voice that has an enormous ability to modulate. He has already sung leading baritone roles, in addition his repertoire encompasses about four hundred art songs in eight different languages.  As if that were not enough, Geller also enjoys an excellent reputation as interpreter of Jewish music.  As many sided, then, as the program was, so little was left to be desired by Ian Geller’s interpretation.  

 

That Geller, with all his impressive vocal power, can be extremely sensitive, he proved at the outset with Georg Friedrich

Ian Geller understood, thereby, how to captivate his audience again and again, as in two songs from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” by Gustav Mahler (1860-1911).  The combination of simple folksong and late romantic harmonic intensification make the Mahler songs into melodic atmospheric treasures; impressive urgency was added through Geller’s interpretation.

 

Following the intermission Geller again proved himself master of the soft as well as the loud tones.  After three songs from Maurice Ravel’s cycle, “Don Quichotte à Dulcinée,” he could have found no better transition to the final part, which was reserved for Jewish songs, than “Deux mélodies Hébraïques” with the hymn, “Kaddisch,” also by Ravel, Ian Geller interpreted the chassidic songs, filled with gentle ecstasy, three of which he had arranged in an appropriate manner, with the same urgency and fervor which had distinguished the first part of the song recital.

 

The enraptured audience, which experienced a concert truly worth hearing, applauded for three encores.

 

proved at the outset with Georg Friedrich Händel’s “Dalla guerra amoroso,” in German “Aus dem Kampf mit der Liebe” (in English “From the War with Love”).  In his presentation of the Händelian work, Geller brought forth all of that which the “War with Love” incorporates; joy and sorrow, fire and tenderness were the effective elements of the composition and the interpretation equally.  Rainer Gepp revealed himself here, as in the rest of the program, as being a superior piano accompanist who knew how to support Geller splendidly and who seemed to have an almost telepathic understanding with him.

 

The approximately 200 songs of Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) do not form a cosmos of the breadth of a Franz Schubert. They sound as if Brahms wanted to sublimate in the most spontaneous artistic expression, the song, that which was denied him in life.  The six Brahms songs which were on the program on Saturday were interpreted by Ian Geller in a way which underscored their liveliness.  Geller gave fully of himself and lived directly with the songs.  This was not an exhibition of emotions, the feelings here were real and believable.

The poems of Wilhelm Müller, basis of the ”Winterreise” by Franz Schubert, would, perhaps, without this musical setting, have largely fallen into oblivion. Within the category “art song” text and music melt into an inseparable unity in such a manner that frequently the text can only be thought of in terms of the already composed melodic setting.  The German art song is inseparably bound with the name Schubert.  Not only the vocal line but also the piano accompaniment stands in the service of a closely knit tone-word relationship and the textual meaning.

 

 

piano, and had the ability to evoke images and moods realistically before the eyes of the listeners.  Several times he deliberately placed a word a bit late in order to give it a particular weight and and to direct and build the tension of the meaning of the text.

 Klaus Witteler reacted at the piano to every timing and dynamic nuance of the singer.  He was additionally convincing through his very clear, differentiated, and virtuoso playing.  At times he ran the risk of covering the singer through too loud playing.  But this did not spoil the impression of a duo perfectly tuned in to one another.                  JÜRGEN RAIDT

 

Though at first, in Ian Geller’s interpretation, some crescendi may have seemed too brutal or an occasional dynamic inner differentiation exaggerated - it became more and more evident with how much insight and suggestion the singer gave of himself to the moods and the atmosphere of the individual songs, how he lived to the limit the gloomy, melancholy fundamental tone and the often agitated feelings.  With his astonishing volume Ian Geller could have filled quite different halls, but also in the piano-range he had available every gradation of tonal nuance.  He utilized the effect of a subito piano, and had the ability to evoke images

Schubert’s “Winterreise” in the Palais Wittgenstein

Unity in the Song

 

Breisach (de).  A musical happening that one does not encounter every day was offered to the visitors at the concert presented by the Jugendmusikschule Kaiserstuhl-Tuniberg together with the Carl-Schurz-Haus (Amerikahaus) Freiburg and the Breisach Festival in the Hall of the Hugo-Höfler Realschule, Breisach.

 

The organizers were able to engage the renowned American baritone, Ian Geller of Chicago who was on a vacation in Germany and during that time could only give two concerts.  In his introductory greeting, Mayor Fritz Schanno thanked all those involved, especially the Business Manager of the Jugendmusikschule, Karl-Anton Hanagarth, and the members of the festival association for the organization of the evening.

The concert opened with the song cycle “An die ferne Geliebte” op. 98 by Ludwig van Beethoven after texts by Alois Jeitteles.  From a subdued beginning Geller built to high expressive power, masterfully supported by pianist Rainer Gepp.  His interpretations revealed great love of musical detail without excess.  

 

The next work on the program was the “Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen” by Gustav Mahler with texts partly by the composer stemming from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn.”  The four pieces, frequently going to the limit of traditional song form, placed on the singer extremely high requirements.  Through his great ability to color his voice, Geller had the power to impart a personal expression to the texts, which fluctuate through nature from deep sorrow to consolation, directly touching the listeners.

 

The evening closed with the cycle “Dichterliebe” op. 48 by Robert Schumann after texts by Heinrich Heine.

A characteristic of this music is that the piano steps out of its accompanying function and takes an equal part in the musical creation.   Through this, a back-and-forth play developed between Geller and Gepp, who were able to form the 16 songs into a musical unity, the shaping of which revealed a high degree of adaptability and creative power.

 

Long sustained applause thanked the artists for their superior musical performance.   There were several encores of which a thrilling interpretation of Franz Schubert’s “Erlkönig” should be especially pointed out.

A light-hearted, kitschy Chelm

If you are planning to see Ian Geller’s one-man show Chelm! at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts because you are looking for an informative evening on the subject of Eastern European Jewry, you are looking in the wrong place.  But if you are interested in hearing a dynamic and virtuoso young singer who would be just as comfortable at Symphony Center doing an evening of German art songs or Italian arias, you definitely have the right address.

 

Geller’s theme, the wise fools of Chelm, is in reality nothing more than a prop for his two-hour show of excerpts from well-known folktales and Yiddish folksongs, side by side with a few popular selections from the synagogue liturgy, no doubt interspersed here as a result of Geller’s cantorial career.

 

The entire show was written, composed and arranged by the Chicago native, and is a production of The Opera Factory.

 

In Chelm! Geller retells the tale of the hero (if he can be called that), Chaim Yankel, and his ill-fated attempt to journey to Warsaw.

 

Geller’s Chelm is also populated with a number of other colorful characters including the town rabbi, Levi Yitzhok Lochinkopf; the richest man in Chelm, Reb Moshe Hotgelt; and a host of others with the stereotypical characteristics straight out of Yiddish folklore made popular by Sholom Aleichem.

 

Every situation poor Chaim Yankel finds himself in on this journey leading to nowhere always provides an opportunity for a song, some very familiar, some with a slightly new twist, but always recognizable as part of the traditional repertoire.

 

There is no wild innovation going on here.  But Geller’s full-bodied voice ranges effortlessly from the near whisper of a lullaby to the booming explosion of a joyous dance tune, never missing a beat.

 

Although the start of the show was a bit slow going, by mid-program Geller had the audience wound up with him into this nonsensical story.

 

At one point he even took the risk of asking the audience to join him in singing the chorus of the popular Yiddish folksong “Tumbalalaika.”  Although they were not standing in the aisles doing the wave, the audience did join in, and they clearly enjoyed the chance to be a part of the show.

 

Stuart Leitch, Geller’s piano accompanist, did a commendable job, on cue for every song and never overpowering the singer.

 

Although this was a very lighthearted, even kitschy production, it was just what this reviewer needed after recently reading depressing historical accounts of the destruction of the real Chelm during the Second World War.

 

Geller was able to remind the audience, myself included, that there once was a vibrant, varied and rich Jewish cultural presence in eastern Europe.  For just a couple of hours we, and they who once populated those streets, were all there in Chelm once again.

 

Chelm! is playing at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts, 9501 Skokie Blvd., Skokie.  Show times are Sat. evenings at 8 p.m. and Sun. afternoons at 3 p.m., through Aug. 29. Call 847-673-6300.

Theater Review: ‘Chelm!’

Every ethnic group has its stories and legends and perhaps none are more quaint than the stories about Chelm,

a town in Poland that is inhabited by fools.

 

In Jewish folklore, the people of Chelm are a well meaning group of flibberty gibbits who do many funny things.  

The stories, of course, helped to ease the pain of the anti-Semitism in Eastern Europe.

 

Baritone Ian Geller has taken these stories and woven them into a cohesive evening of original songs

and story-telling that will be enjoyed by all.  One need not be Jewish to enjoy the show.

 

Geller has a marvelous, operatic quality singing voice and a commanding presence for story-telling.  The only

drawback to the performance was that the theatre was entirely too cold and the audience really could not warm up

to the performance given by Mr. Geller.  It is a shame, too, because he sang his heart out and was most entertaining.

 

“Chelm!” is running Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. through Aug. 29 at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts, 9501 N. Skokie Blvd., at Golf Road in Skokie.

Appearing before a near capacity audience, baritone Ian Geller presented his seventh annual recital at Leisure World’s Clubhouse Three on Thursday, Feb. 17. Geller has successfully combined a career as Cantor of Congregation Kol Ami in Chicago and as an acclaimed recitalist and opera performer throughout America and Europe.

 

His varied program revealed a consistantly high level of vocal and artistic excellence. The Chicago pianist, Clara Geller, the soloist’s mother, proved to be a superb and always supportive accompanist.

 

The first half of the program consisted of operatic arias.  Preceded by Geller’s brief summary of the plot and of the respective excerpts in the context of the total story, these arias were performed not as detached “selections,” but with perceptive insight and appropriate variations of style and vocal color.

 

The program opened with two arias from Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro”; the first, Figaro’s teasing aria “Non più andrai” sung to Cherubino, the second, Count Almaviva’s vengeful “Vedrò mentr’io sospiro.”  Two arias from Verdi’s “Don Carlo,” Rodrigo’s “Per me giunto” and O

Carlo,” Rodrigo’s “Per me giunto” and O Carlo ascolta,” were most expressively performed.  Puccini’s “Nulla! Silenzio” from “Il Tabarro” captured the grotesque horror of a wronged husband’s vengeance.  Rossini’s patter song, “Largo al factotum” from “The Barber of Seville” was sung with rollicking good humor. Concluding the first half of the program were “I Got Plenty o’ Nuthin” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So” from Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” which captured every nuance of both text and music.  

 

Following the intermission, his three-song cycle of Ravel’s “Don Quichotte à Dulcinée” successfully caught the lyricism of the “Romantic Song,” the subtle restraint of the “Epic Song” and the high spirits of the “Drinking Song.”  

 

The final group included Yiddish and Hebrew songs.  The first, an a cappella cantorial solo “Modim anachnu loch” (We Give Thanks unto Thee) was in the idiom of nineteenth century East European synagogue music with occasional coloratura ornamentation, reaching a climactic conclusion in Geller’s superb high register.

 

The nostalgic “Jerusalem of Gold” by the twentieth century Israeli composer Naomi Shemer, and two Chassidic songs from the Yiddish repertoire concluded the printed program.

 

Following a standing ovation, Geller sang three encores: Rossini’s ebullient “La Danza,” “O Sole Mio” (sans Pavarotti’s handkerchief) and, as a Valentine’s Day reminiscence, Irving Berlin’s “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” in which the audience were invited to join the soloist.   [N.B. Leo Friedman, not Irving Berlin, is the composer].  

 

The appreciation of the listeners for Geller’s excellent and communicative performance was tangibly reflected in the in the warmth of their response throughout the performance.

 Heinz-Jacob Spelmans, an accompanist of widely treasured empathy, added to the cohesiveness with his customary superior handling of the technically difficult piano parts.  Voice and instrument melted with homogeneous sound into joy and tears, into knightly strife and lute playing, and into foaming waves and constant love.

 

  The endless applause of the full concert hall was interrupted by the singer with three encores.  “Von ewiger Liebe” and “Feldeinsamkeit,” were both songs by the reigning composer of this marvelous concert.  Only once another composer intruded into the genius of Brahms’ song creations.  In “La Danza” by G. Rossini the celebrated baritone let an exuberant mood burst forth.  

 

 It remains to hope that the engaging singer finds his way to Düsseldorf again soon.

 

 Angermund.   When a singer, through his voice, his gift of interpretation, and power of communication, generates so much enthusiasm and joy to a jaded public, as did the Chicago born baritone Ian Geller, one can only wish to be able to hear this highly gifted artist soon again in the state capital city.  

 

 The unanimous acclaim which Ian Geller already elicited at his first Düsseldorf concert in the renowned Kammermusiksaal of the Palais Wittgenstein, continued in a most impressive way at the 5th Angermunder concert.  While the singer showed his versatility in Palais Wittgenstein through the stylistic breadth of the literature which he offered, he concentrated in the second concert, in the Angermund Pfarrsaal of St. Agnes, on the romantic fairy tale song cycle, “The Wondrous Love Story of the Beautiful Magelone and Count Peter of Provence,” op.  33, the only song cycle by

the highly romantic composer, Jonannes Brahms, set to poems by Ludwig Tieck.  

 

 The fullness of musical fantasy and the art of German romantic story telling, which Brahms exhibits inimitably in these fifteen romances, the tone pictures of the situations and moods of the romantic world of chivalry, the joys and sorrows of Count Peter of Provence, to feel and express all these needs two interpreters of high artistic calibre like Ian Geller and his accompanist, Heinz-Jacob Spelmans.  The baritone understands how to captivate, enrapture, and enchant his audience with a beautiful and warm timbre.  His enormous ability to modulate his voice and his dynamic flexibility brought the spirit of the Magelone romances into the hall with fascinating artistry.

romantic tale, after a text by Ludwig Tieck, offered to the singer the best opportunities to convey the complete palette of his vocal interpretive ability. Surging forward and rising to highest dramatic urgency, Geller fashioned the temporary farewell and the romance about the “schäumenden Wellen” (“foaming waves”) which oppress the hero Peter.  In contrast, the “Rückkehr in die Heimat” (“return to the homeland”) was muted and performed with great feeling. The expressive power and creative opportunities of the singer enraptured the audience.  Moreover, it was to his great credit that his performance never slid into exaggerated pathos.  It was evident that Ian Geller enjoyed telling the fairy tale. “And they all lived happily ever after” ended his tale.

 

Not only the bearded singer beamed over the success which he had at the Angermund concert.  The listeners too were extremely pleased to have experienced this musical event.

 

 

About 150 listeners had come to the rectory of St. Agnes.  The small hall, which provided a pleasant setting with good acoustics and an intimate atmosphere, was thus fully occupied. Also numerous Düsseldorfers who had already heard the singer from Chicago in his first highly acclaimed concert at the end of May in the Düsseldorf Palais Wittgenstein did not want to miss this event. The music lovers got their money’s worth; such a concert has seldom been heard lately in Angermund and its environs.

 

Operatic arias from Purcell to Verdi, various works with orchestra, and song cycles from Mahler to Schumann are on Ian Geller’s repertoire list.  That he does not shy away from such popular music as Jewish folksongs, he proved in the concert in the Palais Wittgenstein.  In Angermund, however, his program encompassed a very much narrower frame. He sang fifteen romances from the “Wondrous Love Story of the Beautiful Magelone and Count Peter of Provence.”  The highly romantic tale, after a text by Ludwig Tieck, offered to the singer  

 

 

Angermund - The encores exhibited most impressively his vocal qualities: Ian Geller, baritone from Chicago, who performed the fifth chamber concert at the St. Agnes parish, offered as his second encore a Neapolitan Tarantella by Gioacchino Rossini, and then, because the enraptured audience still would not stop applauding, sang the song “Feldeinsamkeit” by Johannes Brahms. The baritone employed great vocal power in the wild “La Danza;” in contrast he pulled back his velvety full voice in the elegiac Brahms song, eschewing every pathos, only allowing the text to take effect.  A soft, yet beautifully differentiated performance, despite the quiet dynamic, - even in the high notes of the “Himmelblau” (“blue sky”) Ian Geller showed no strain - was the result.  The audience celebrated “its” Ian Geller with stormy applause.  The outstanding piano accompaniment of Heinz-Jacob Spelmans was no less a part of the success.

ACCLAIMED BARITONE

 

 

Already the stylistic breadth of the three encores (Rossini, Wolf, and Brahms) revealed the versatility of the singer, Ian Geller from Chicago, who gave a highly acclaimed song recital in the Palais Wittgenstein.

 

The gentle ecstasy of the chassidic songs, which Geller performed in his own arrangement, at the end of his good hundred minute program, proved in retrospect to be a red thread through the interpretation of the entire program.  And he who might have made absolutely wrong associations with Ivan Rebroff in the last piece (“The Rabbi commanded us to be merry, drink whiskey and not wine”), would nevertheless have to admit that the voice of the latter is only a meager shadow of that which the baritone from the States had to offer.

 

Ian Geller commands a voice that has an enormous ability for modulation.  Even in extremely high registers he offers an apparently easy pianissimo, for which

versatile talent of the baritone in its entirety: “Revelge” from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” by Gustav Mahler.  The gallows humor, which is not at all funny - the Jew Mahler created it with grotesque distorted march music - is not unlike the often tragic humor of the above mentioned Jewish chassidic songs. This Mahler song was Ian Geller’s masterpiece.

 

Klaus Witteler was a worthy accompanist. Between the two of them existed a musically fruitful consensus.  Witteler used wise accents, honed contours, and, listening carefully, kept in the background.

 

In the song “R’tze Haschem Elokenu” (without piano) Geller became a Jewish cantor who communicated most expressively aspects of that world view in which self assurance and fear of God are not contradictory.

apparently easy pianissimo, for which many a singer with the designation tenor might envy him.  The burlesque bluster of a drinking song by Ravel is as much a part of him as is the extremely intimate expression of the art song “Feldeinsamkeit” by Brahms, which he achieved as the lyrical highpoint of the evening, without falling into sentimental whining - a temptation which even good singers cannot always resist.

 

Geller’s ability to color his voice is astounding.  One was almost tempted to believe that Ravel and Brahms had been performed by two utterly different interpreters.  That the soloist, who is endowed with great suggestive power, also commands theatrical gestures was proven in the works of Handel’s Italian opera phase.  The recitatives and arias from “Dalla guerra amoroso,” which easily run the risk of appearing formal, he managed to make alive and direct.  One piece on the program demanded the versatile talent of the baritone in its

Love’s sorrow is not an artistic problem but a human one.  Ian Geller, baritone, made that clear during his recital in the Palais Wittgenstein.  When one is accustomed to the highly stylized German way of singing, the direct and yet dramatic way of singing of the American seemed at first surprising.  But during the course of the evening Ian Geller won more and more the sympathy of the listeners through his truthful expressive power.

 

The singer created from abundance. His voluminous body was the backbone for the long stream of breath in which he embedded the tones, either richly whispered or operatically resplendent.  He was flexible in all registers, was able to very quickly hold back the sound or transfer effortlessly to a full sound without jeopardizing the lyrical lines.

 

 

flexible judaic tradition of singing, in the “Dichterliebe” by Robert Schumann.  His statements sounded immediate.  The “crucial word” was plainly and simply “forgotten.” That the beloved girl married another led to great disappointment.  On the other hand, in Schubert, the look into the eyes produced unrestricted singing of joy in which Ian Geller could employ his full, softly rounded, vocal power.

 

Klaus Witteler proved to be a very pleasing accompanist, who used pedaled sound for the predominently soft singing and who sensitively followed the dramatic development of the singer, definitely expressing the various characters of the songs in a fitting manner.

In the cycle “An die ferne Geliebte” by Beethoven, one had to first get a bit used to the dark, full vocal colouring.  Also, these songs do not present many opportunities for dramatic development. That changed with the “Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen” by Gustav Mahler. The back-and-forth between joy and sorrow in the contrasting images written by Mahler himself was impressively interpreted by Ian Geller and Klaus Witteler at the piano.  The “Two blue eyes” which follow the lyrical self and plunge into misery took on veritable form.

 

Still clearer became the interpretive style of the baritone, who is at home in the flexible judaic tradition of singing, in the

Ian Geller - Interpreter of High Vocal Culture

lm  Bergheim.   A concert of international level took place in the Forum of the Bergheimer Gutenberg-Gymnasium. Ian Geller (baritone), one of the most renowned vocal soloists in the USA, accompanied by Rainer Gepp, piano, presented a recital of song cycles by Beethoven, Mahler, and Schumann.

 

A brief stay in Germany of this important singer and favorable circumstances, made this guest concert in Bergheim possible, for which one would have wished a bigger audience.

 

All listeners, however, who followed the invitation of the Volkshochschule on posters and in the daily papers, experienced an evening of quite extraordinary level.  The fame

extraordinary level.  The fame which preceded Ian Geller and which was printed in the publicity, found itself confirmed in this concert.  We heard an interpreter who had at his disposal not only extraordinary vocal means but also phenomenal expressive and creative power which touched all nuances of emotion from quiet melancholy to violent passion, and who transformed these into a performance which most deeply impressed the breathlessly attentive audience.

 

Thus, in Beethoven’s cycle “An die ferne Geliebte,” in Mahler’s “Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen,” and in Robert Schumann’s “Dichterliebe,” the singer was able to bring forth the individuality of each composition

composition and each composer. Alongside the faultless interpretation, it was  above  all  the voluminous vocal register of the singer which rendered the performances an unclouded joy for everyone in the auditorium.

 

Similar words are to be said of Rainer Gepp who accompanied the singer and inspired him through his expressive playing.  As the art songs, which were offered on this evening, deserve the title “ensemble music,” so has the accompanying pianist equal share in the success.   The knowledgeable audience thanked with exuberant applause. Encores were Schubert’s “Erlkönig” and ”Zueignung” by Richard Strauss.
