left:20px; top:160px; width:500px; height:17980px;-moz-box-sizing:border-box;-webkit-box-sizing:border-box;box-sizing:border-box; overflow:hidden;"> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C">IAN GELLER </span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C0">baritone / teacher</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Telephone: 917-<wbr>439-<wbr>1563 </span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C2"><a href="mailto:iangeller@email.com" style="color:#0000ff;">E-<wbr>mail: iangeller@email.com</a></span><span class="Normal-C3"> </span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C4">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C">MY APPROACH TO TEACHING </span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C">AND SINGING</span><span class="Normal-C5"> </span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C6">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C5">and SOME OF MY FAVORITE SINGERS</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C7">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Q. &nbsp;Just what is a great voice? &nbsp;(Rudolph Bing called it,  A disease of the throat)! &nbsp;What is vocal technique? &nbsp;What is the relationship of the great voice to the great technique? &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">A. &nbsp;We think of a great voice as one with power and volume, beautifully colored, perfectly controlled, always smooth and easy, always perfectly in tune, with smooth attacks, controlled dynamics, flawless sustained notes, the ability to sustain long phrases in one breath, an even scale with no breaks from top to bottom, easy and well controlled high notes and low notes, and with a vibrato that is smooth, even, subtle, and unobtrusive, adding vibrancy to the sound. &nbsp;(Is this you)? &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Technique is the physical ability to do all of this. &nbsp;Technique, simply defined, is the physical wherewithal to make music, whether instrumental or vocal. &nbsp;Period! &nbsp;This may seem very simplistic but this says it all. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Some people, perhaps even most people, regard technique as the ability to barrel through  difficult passages, usually meaning fast, high, loud passages, without getting into too much trouble. &nbsp;But real technique is far more encompassing. &nbsp;The physical ability to control every aspect of the performance, including dynamics, phrasing, tone color, indeed, every element of musicality is as much a part of technique as is knocking the socks off the audience in the showy virtuoso passages. &nbsp;Sustaining the slowest music with a perfectly even line and flawless legato, with the ability to control the tiniest, most subtle of nuances is a most important aspect of technique, and is more difficult than the so-<wbr>called  difficult stuff. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Vocal technique should be thought of as plural rather than singular. There are many different techniques, each of which enables the singer to do certain things but not necessarily others. &nbsp;Basic to most of the techniques of tone production are correct posture, use of the abdominal muscles in breathing, opening the throat, correct positioning of the larynx and tongue, and most important, a feeling of ease and relaxation. &nbsp;Each vowel, each consonant, every dynamic level, every coloration, and every dramatic effect has specific ways of being produced for maximum beauty and projection with maximum ease. &nbsp;Proper technique enables the singer to produce a big and gorgeous tone, express emotion, and bring a tear to every eye, a lump to every throat, and a few chills to every spine (not to mention a few dollars to his/her bank account). </span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">The singer may not always be conscious of his/her technique and his/her ability to control everything. &nbsp;Often these techniques are instinctive and the singer is simply able to do all of this. &nbsp;We say that such a singer is born with a great voice. &nbsp;But in most cases some of these techniques are lacking and the singer must learn how to do these things. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Standing in the way is a widespread but very false belief: a great voice, killer high notes, devastating power, dazzling </span><span class="Normal-C8">fioratura</span><span class="Normal-C1">, floating </span><span class="Normal-C8">pianissimi</span><span class="Normal-C1">, impeccable diction, phenomenal breath control, and all the other good stuff we admire in our favorite singers are things with which one must be born. &nbsp;We use the verb,  to have, to refer to the various characteristics, both good and bad, of the voice. &nbsp;Wobbles or smoothness, register breaks or an even scale, poor sound or a beautiful sound, shortness of breath or a seemingly endless supply of breath, a limited range or a great top and bottom, and whatever else you can think of, are all things which we say one  has. &nbsp;I even say it myself. &nbsp;But this is wrong! In truth, it would be correct to substitute the verb,  to do. &nbsp;The singer s attributes and the singer s problems are caused by what the singer  does physically rather than what the singer  has. &nbsp;All of the aspects and techniques of fine singing can be learned, developed, and improved: ease, power and volume, beauty, an even scale with no breaks or changes of quality, high and low notes, smooth vibrato, and pinpoint dynamic control. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Please do not think that I am saying that just anyone can become another Eileen Farrell, Fiorenza Cossoto, Franco Corelli, Leonard Warren, or Kurt Moll. &nbsp;(Sigh... wouldn t it be nice if we could). What I am saying is that most talented, intelligent, hard-<wbr>working people can vastly improve upon what they now sound like and come much closer to greatness than they may imagine. &nbsp;Who knows what an underdeveloped voice can achieve if nothing is tried? &nbsp;And the folks who don t try achieve nothing. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Most people, however, who lack aspects of a fine voice believe the common view that a fine voice is something with which one is born, and thus, do not try, do not seek out teachers who can help them, and do not work on their problems with the assurance that their inadequacies can be overcome. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">I KNOW that all the aspects of a fine voice can be learned. &nbsp;These days I am frequently told that I was born with a fine voice by people who did not know me way back when. &nbsp;But no one knows better than I that I was not born with nearly the voice I have now. At one time I had no top, no bottom, no power, no control, and a dinky little sound. &nbsp;I heard the comment,  Well, he must have had it all along, locked up inside. &nbsp;My response is:  Of course! &nbsp;We all have it! &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Actually, there are two things with which you really must be born and  have: talent and intelligence. &nbsp;They do not necessarily go together. &nbsp;Furthermore, in the talent department, it seems that sensitivity to pitch and sensitivity to rhythm also do not always go together. &nbsp;Talent and intelligence both seem to be genetic. &nbsp;One has what one has, although one can learn to use what one has more effectively. &nbsp;You need sensitivity to tone and pitch so you can hear when a musical sound is right, and you need an IQ higher than your age which enables you to analyze and figure out what you are doing and what you need to do to improve. &nbsp;If you have an analytical mind which enjoys problem-<wbr>solving along with a good musical ear, you can build your voice. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">An interesting note: researchers have examined larynxes excised from cadavers of singers and non-<wbr>singers and cannot tell the difference between the larynx of one and the other. &nbsp;The difference is all in how they used what they had. &nbsp;Remember, for most people the basic instrument is there. &nbsp;Consider, owning a Stradivari violin does not mean you can play it. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">THIS IS IT! &nbsp;THE PART FOR WHICH YOU HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Q. &nbsp;How is all this done? &nbsp;How exactly does one develop a great sound? </span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">A. &nbsp;You must learn to sing while standing with correct posture, breathing properly, low into the abdomen, with the belly and ribcage expanding, not heaving the chest and shoulders, and opening your throat, which involves relaxing and dropping the jaw easily, never with force, feeling a lift in the upper back of the throat, and keeping the base of the tongue low and relaxed. &nbsp;You then sing simple vocalises strictly maintaining correct posture, breathing, and the open throat. &nbsp;Many aspects of correct posture, breathing, the open throat, and relaxation are usually foreign to most singers and they must be very very strictly maintained on all vocalises and music until they become second nature, which may happen within months or many years, depending on the singer.</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Q. &nbsp;Why is correct posture, breathing low into the abdomen, and the open throat necessary? &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">A. &nbsp;It is efficient. &nbsp;Correct posture facilitates proper breathing. &nbsp;If the work of breathing comes primarily from the belly and ribcage expanding while the chest and shoulders remain relatively motionless, the result is far greater speed in inhalation, with much less effort, and with much greater control of the airflow and thus, of the whole voice. &nbsp;The chest and shoulders are cumbersome and heavy and if they move, singing can become tiring and lead to unwanted throat tension. &nbsp;The open and relaxed throat enables the sound to resonate more fully through a much wider and more even range, with a smoother scale, and much easier high notes, with much less physical effort. &nbsp;The voice becomes much more powerful, more flexible, more beautiful, more expressive, capable of doing exactly what the singer wants, and it becomes much less tiring to sing anything. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">The moment you depart from the correct posture or proper breathing or the open throat, and sing with undue stress or tension, I stop and correct you. &nbsp;This means I stop some people every few seconds! &nbsp;Singing through lots of repertoire may be lots of fun, but it is the constant stopping and polishing of details that builds real technique, whether vocal or instrumental. &nbsp;Please note that, due to differences in the physical structure of each individual, the ideal position of the mouth, tongue, and throat may be different for each singer. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">You will see, hear, and feel how the position and relaxing of your tongue, jaw and throat, along with your posture and the use of the abdominal muscles in support, affect tone color and dynamics, clear up your register breaks, cracks, wobbles, extend your range easily, both up and down, increase your volume and resonance without strain, and develop absolute pinpoint control of everything you do. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">You learn how sung vowels assume different jaw, mouth, and tongue positions from spoken vowels, particularly as the notes ascend higher and higher. &nbsp;This is because we normally speak on low tones and sing on much higher tones, and, for acoustical reasons, the quality of most vowels requires a more open position on a high note than on a lower note. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">By maintaining relaxation with the open throat you will feel how the voice seems to resonate higher into the head (sometimes called the head voice) as you ascend higher and higher. &nbsp;Conversly, you will feel how the voice seems to resonate lower into the chest (usually called the chest voice) as you descend lower and lower. &nbsp;The male descent into the chest voice is very subtle, usually causes no problems, and often is completely unnoticed; the female chest voice can often be a drastic change and cause great problems. &nbsp;For the most part these changes are caused by changes in the position of the larynx, but in part these are also caused by the acoustics of the body. &nbsp;You can learn how to make the voice seem to ascend into the head or descend into the chest gradually, thus avoiding the sudden register breaks or changes of quality which afflict many singers. &nbsp;That the voice seems to be in the head or chest is an illusion, like a mirage, but it is a real illusion based on resonance which you feel in cavities in the body, just as a mirage, though not a lake, consists of real light waves which you see reflected off hot land surface in the desert. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">An interesting sidelight: I once taught a baritone who was a physical education major. &nbsp;He told me he was taught by a football coach to suck in the gut and breathe up into his chest, the wrong way for singing, because when you get tackled it does not knock the wind out of you. &nbsp;Singers, however, rarely get tackled. (Perhaps Cavaradossi may be tackled when he tries to attack Scarpia, but after that moment he does not have to sing until the next act)! &nbsp;My student tried breathing my way, low into the abdomen, while swimming laps and found he could suddenly do more laps. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">IMPORTANT! &nbsp;I am specific about basic technique, relaxation, ease, relieving undue stress and tension, and opening the throat, especially in the development of power and resonance. &nbsp;All of my best teachers, in every subject I have ever studied, were always alert to the slightest departure from perfection. &nbsp;They would let nothing go by and I, too, let nothing go by. &nbsp;I believe it is the only way to teach effectively. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Remember, most problems are caused by poor position and/or improper tensions. &nbsp;These problems vanish as soon as one stands, breathes, and opens correctly and relaxes in the proper manner. The results are apparent at once at the first lesson. &nbsp;Immediate results are often spectacular! &nbsp;Again, the results include an immediate effortless increase in power, wider range, with especially easy top notes, and a smoothness and ease in the passaggio. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">A BIZARRE, BUT RELATED, PROBLEM  SOLVED! &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Many years ago I wanted to sing </span><span class="Normal-C8">Cortigiani, vil razza dannata</span><span class="Normal-C1"> from </span><span class="Normal-C8">Rigoletto</span><span class="Normal-C1">. &nbsp;Almost two decades earlier, when I was around seven or eight years old, my mother had bought me a ten inch lp of excerpts from </span><span class="Normal-C8">Rigoletto</span><span class="Normal-C1"> with an unnamed cast. &nbsp;The baritone, who was sensational, sounded curiously like the young Leonard Warren, who made a number of these no-<wbr>name recordings early in his career (along with, I think, Eleanor Steber, Jean Madiera, Armand Tokatyan and other Met stars). &nbsp;In the cadenza at the end, on the  </span><span class="Normal-C8">pie,</span><span class="Normal-C1"> the first syllable of the second  </span><span class="Normal-C8">pietà,</span><span class="Normal-C1"> he gives forth with a small but very poignant sob on an Eb, which always broke my heart. &nbsp;I never heard another baritone do this. &nbsp;I wanted to sob at that point also, but I couldn t. &nbsp;I asked people who could sob how they did it. &nbsp;My teacher, Sonia Sharnova, was a great teacher, but she could not help. &nbsp;One expert sobber told me,  You just gotta feel it. &nbsp;I did feel it! &nbsp;I really did feel it! &nbsp;But I couldn t DO it. Finally, finally, I figured out what I was doing  wrong. &nbsp;A sob is actually a small crack in the tone; a moment of falsetto at the right highly emotional moment. &nbsp;Cracks, however, at the wrong moment are very much unwanted. &nbsp;I was taught by Sonia Sharnova to relax and drop my jaw, feel a lift in the back of my throat, and relax the base of my tongue. &nbsp;I practiced this assiduously and did it conscientiously. &nbsp;But by doing this I COULD NOT CRACK TO SAVE MY LIFE!! Perhaps that is great for normal classical repertoire, but for this supercharged emotional moment I needed to sob. &nbsp;The solution was easy. &nbsp;When I got to that Eb I simply closed up and tightened my throat. &nbsp;BINGO!! &nbsp;I cracked like you wouldn t believe, and what a sob it was! &nbsp;At first it was godawful, uncontrolled, and very excessive, but I played around with it and refined it until it was just what I wanted. &nbsp;I figured out how I didn t have to actually tighten my throat and was able to crack/sob with relaxation using an easy flick of the back of the tongue and throat. I asked.  Next Monday is my audition, she replied. After that first lesson I never saw her again, but I do believe she did not pass the audition). </span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">A. &nbsp;Many people can do much of this immediately in a lesson, and, as stated above, results are apparent at once at the first lesson. Immediate results are often spectacular! &nbsp;But please do not expect to learn or be able to do everything immediately. &nbsp;Because there are so many intricate details for each vowel and consonant, different in each range, it can take quite a while for some people to become consistent in performance. &nbsp;New feelings, sounds, sensations, and positions must become second nature. &nbsp;One should not have to think about technique in performance. &nbsp;Technique should just be there and the performance should just go. &nbsp;Some people learn quickly and easily, but others have great difficulty giving up long established tensions. &nbsp;A frequent problem is that any change in tone production goes hand in hand with a change in the physical way one does it, and therefore, feels different from the sensations to which one has become accustomed. &nbsp;Thus, many students are actually unnerved by a new feeling of relaxed singing. &nbsp;Some students are confused by the unexpected brightness and resonance of a free tone. &nbsp;Often when students produce a truly resonant tone for the first time it sounds to them excessively bright, brassy, and shrill, because they are hearing the sound which is within their bodies rather than the sound that projects outward to the listener. </span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Q. &nbsp;Do I teach everyone the same way?</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">A. &nbsp;Wouldn t it be nice and easy if I could. &nbsp;But one cannot teach voice to everyone the same way. &nbsp;There may be similarities as to how things work and feel for everyone, but there are also differences. &nbsp;Every person and every voice is different physically, and thus every voice sounds different, just as every fingerprint, DNA, or snowflake is different. &nbsp;What works one way for one student may well work a different way for another. &nbsp;I begin mechanistically, telling the student exactly how to stand, breathe, open and relax the throat, and feel breath pressure, or support, from the abdomen. &nbsp;Occasionally, however, I encounter some students who do not respond well to this. &nbsp;There are a slew of other techniques involving imagery and imagination which I have learned and continue to learn in pedagogy classes, reading, and experimentation. &nbsp;I have not yet encountered a student who does not respond to certain techniques. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Q. &nbsp;How long can your voice last? &nbsp;At what age does the voice deteriorate? </span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">A. &nbsp;If you sing well with proper breath support and an open and relaxed throat, you can go on and on sounding great! &nbsp;There are a few fine singers, who know exactly what they are doing, who sound young when they are sixty. &nbsp;Placido Domingo is seventyish and sounds great. &nbsp;Check out a film on YouTube.com of the great Russian bass, Mark Reizen, singing Prince Gremin s aria from </span><span class="Normal-C8">Eugen Onegin</span><span class="Normal-C1"> in a special performance on the occasion of his ninetieth birthday! &nbsp;He sounds terrific! &nbsp;(Unfortunately, Magda Olivero, singing at her 100th birthday celebration, does sound way past her prime, but when she was only 80...). &nbsp;But if you do not sing well you can be over the hill before you start! &nbsp;How many singers sound old when they are under thirty? &nbsp;I can think of a few examples of early retirees, but no names. &nbsp;I can t afford to get sued! &nbsp;Old age will cause a voice to go downhill, but only when the body goes downhill. &nbsp;The defects we hear in many older singers are not always due to old age. &nbsp;The wobbles and painful high notes are often caused by incorrect tension and poor position that have crept, little by little, into their singing. &nbsp;If the singer is still sound of body and the problems with tension and position are corrected the older singer immediately regains his/her lost vocal youth. &nbsp;If I may immodestly quote a sixty-<wbr>five year old student at her first lesson with me:  Bless you, Dr. Geller. &nbsp;That s the first high C I ve sung in over twenty years. One of my very best teachers, Sonia Sharnova, a leading mezzo of the Chicago Opera and the German Grand Opera in the thirties and forties, was in great physical shape up to her death at age ninety-<wbr>two. &nbsp;On her ninetieth birthday she suffered a twisted colon and had to be rushed to the hospital for major surgery, pooping her own birthday party. &nbsp;Several days later, when the anesthesia had worn off, I visited her and found her entertaining the nurses singing </span><span class="Normal-C8">Ai nostri monti</span><span class="Normal-C1"> from </span><span class="Normal-C8">Il Trovatore</span><span class="Normal-C1">. Lying in a hospital bed, following abdominal surgery, at age ninety, her voice sounded rich, big, beautiful, and totally steady without a trace of a wobble. (When she would demonstrate in the studio  wow)! &nbsp;She was totally into the techniques of relaxation, the open throat, and support, and she sounded forever in her prime. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Q. &nbsp;But what if I just don t HAVE that great voice, or those thrilling high notes, or that floating pianissimo, or that creamy smoothness, or that even scale? &nbsp;What if my voice is not big enough? &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">A. &nbsp;Baloney! &nbsp;(I know I am being redundundant and repetititious). It is vital to understand that every aspect of the sound of the great voice is based on the way the singer sings physically. &nbsp;That IS technique. Virtually every healthy singer potentially HAS a fine voice, (as do most healthy non-<wbr>singers), but few know how to DO it. &nbsp;Thus, with proper use of the body, most folks WILL have at least a fine voice, those thrilling high notes, that floating pianissimo, that creamy smoothness, that even scale and that big sound. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Q. &nbsp;What vocalises work the best? &nbsp;How does one approach performing music? &nbsp;(And why do I put these apparently different questions together)? &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">A. &nbsp;Mindless repetition of vocalises up and down, over and over does not improve your voice. &nbsp;Singing particular vowels and consonants again and again does not increase freedom, nor improve the top, nor increase resonance. &nbsp;It is only specifically HOW you sing vowels and consonants physically that makes a difference. &nbsp;I use simple scale and arpeggio passages on each vowel, concentrating on maintaining an easy relaxed open throat and an awareness of specifically how everything feels throughout the entire range. &nbsp;In preparing a piece of music I like to approach each phrase of a song or aria as a complex vocalise, where the words and notes provide a series of vowels and consonants on varying pitches and dynamics. &nbsp;Each note, each vowel, each consonant, each syllable must be produced in an easy, free, open, and relaxed manner, with the best possible position and breath support. &nbsp;After carefully practicing this way, everything soon becomes easy and natural, the voice sounds consistantly big, full, and terrific, high notes are always there and everyone is impressed. (Most people don t realize how easy those high notes are for the singer who knows how to do them)! &nbsp;Consider that conductors and coaches, who are usually pianists, will ask singers to do certain passages a certain way. &nbsp;I have seen singers struggle with some nuances due to lack of technique, often accusing conductors of vocal ignorance. &nbsp;The technically proficient singer can do anything without problems. &nbsp;Sorry, I do not have room on this web page to discuss the details of producing each vowel and consonant, but call me: 917-<wbr>439-<wbr>1563. &nbsp;I ll try to answer any question you have. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">Q. &nbsp;How should one practice? &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">A. &nbsp;This is one of the most important paragraphs on this page. &nbsp;I see constantly that many musicians, and especially singers, often do not study and practice properly. &nbsp;Good practice habits can make a huge difference in what one accomplishes. &nbsp;The process is very very simple, but can be very very boring. &nbsp;One must analyze the technical difficulties, examine the position and movement of whatever body parts are involved in singing or playing their instruments, and break apart the music or exercise upon which they are practicing into tiny sections. &nbsp;The sections may be as little as a fraction of one note, perhaps the attack, or the release, or the transition from one vowel to another, or one consonant. &nbsp;The sections should rarely be longer than one phrase until the components of each phrase are perfected or at least greatly improved. &nbsp;Each section is then repeated, over and over, </span><span class="Normal-C8">ad nauseum</span><span class="Normal-C1">, concentrating on perfecting the position, the way in which the muscles are used, solving every musical problem, and getting everything just right. &nbsp;Many singers simply sing through their vocalises and repertoire, rarely correcting anything, and call it practicing. &nbsp;Some specifics: moments before I sat down at my computer to type these words I was practicing </span><span class="Normal-C8">Why Do the Nations</span><span class="Normal-C1"> from Händel s </span><span class="Normal-C8">Messiah</span><span class="Normal-C1">. &nbsp;I have been singing and practicing this aria for over four decades and although it is always a hit with audiences and although I have gotten lots of jobs using it as an audition piece, I seriously expect to go to my grave long before I ever get it right to my personal standards. &nbsp;I don t worry about it because I know my personal standards are far beyond what I, a mere human being, am capable of, but I want to maintain these impossible standards nevertheless. &nbsp;It keeps me in good shape and I do believe that in performance of music, self-<wbr>satisfaction means artistic death. &nbsp;Today I began at the beginning. (Often I start at some troublesome spot in the middle). &nbsp;The first note, C one octave below middle C, is on the word,  why. &nbsp;I repeated that one note perhaps twenty times, first carefully making sure I was breathing correctly, then examining how my jaw relaxed on the [a] sound and making sure the lift at the back of the throat was there at the beginning, ready for the E above middle C on the word,  so in the middle of the phrase. &nbsp;There is always the temptation to force this note and I don t want to do this. &nbsp;Then I continued with the rest of the phrase. &nbsp;I was delighted that years of practice has paid off and I was able to ascend to that E with a small crescendo without a hitch the first time: my voice went right into what some folks call the head voice on the word  so quite smoothly. &nbsp;That E, however is not the peak of the crescendo and must be held back for the next note, middle C, on the word  furiously. &nbsp;To be properly expressive the [fj</span><span class="Normal-C13">U</span><span class="Normal-C1">] must have a small accent, with a small punch from the abdominal muscles while the throat remains perfectly relaxed. &nbsp;It was OK but felt slightly insecure so I repeated the phrase perhaps ten times, playing with the accent, trying a little more or a little less punch, and trying the elongation of the [j] so it came out [fij</span><span class="Normal-C13">U</span><span class="Normal-C1">]. &nbsp;I finally got it the way I liked it, did it two or three more times, and went on to the next phrase. &nbsp;In the hour and a half that I practiced that aria I did not get through the whole piece, but quit in the middle to go on to several impossibly long phrases in </span><span class="Normal-C8">Die zwei blauen Augen</span><span class="Normal-C1"> from Mahler s </span><span class="Normal-C8">Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen</span><span class="Normal-C1">, which I stubbornly insist on doing in one breath. &nbsp;(Sure, I could breathe in the middle as others do, but what good does that do for my breath control)? In order to perform nuances easily and consistantly every time, precisely as I want them to be, I must repeatedly practice the way I physically accomplish them. &nbsp;That is why I get so hung up on technique. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C15">__________________________________________________</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C16">SOME </span><span class="Normal-C4">(78)</span><span class="Normal-C16"> OF MY FAVORITE SINGERS. </span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C17">WHOM DO I CONSIDER TO BE A GREAT SINGER?</span><span class="Normal-C1"> </span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">In teaching voice it is important to know what my standards are and what I consider to be truly fine. &nbsp;I have compiled this list of 78 singers whom I like, admire, and simply happened to think of as I wrote this webpage. &nbsp;(There are many more). &nbsp;All of the singers on the list had at some point, usually earlier in their careers, great refinement and admirable artistic qualities beyond merely a fine instrument. &nbsp;All of them, being human, are imperfect and have some flaws here and there. &nbsp;I, personally, cannot and will not consider putting singers with little refinement and artistry on my list, even though some may have had the greatest vocal instruments ever. &nbsp;Of course I have not heard everyone, therefore, my list is incomplete. &nbsp;Call me if you have any suggestions for additions. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">You do know who all these people are, I hope. &nbsp;If you don t, do yourself a great favor, give yourself a great education, have great fun, and find out. &nbsp;They are all somewhere on CDs and on the web. &nbsp;Most of them have something on YouTube.com. &nbsp;And in general, listen to recordings made earlier in their careers. &nbsp;Many (most?) singers disintegrate in later career (definitely not Magda Olivero, Leontyne Price, Placido Domingo, or Mark Reizen) but often keep or kept singing out of a combination of denial of their failing powers and/or greed: opera companies, presenters and impresarios could sell tickets and make money on the basis of their names no matter how poorly they sound or sounded. &nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="Normal-P"><span class="Normal-C1">What is really important? &nbsp;Before you read my list, I need to mention that once, probably around 1974, my future ex-<wbr>wife and I went to the Stratford Festival in Ontario. &nbsp;After the play, (I have forgotten which play it was, but it might have been Molière s </span><span class="Normal-C8">Le Malade imaginaire</span><span class="Normal-C1"> [The Imaginary Invalid] or Shakespeare s </span><span class="Normal-C8">Love s Labour s Lost</span><span class="Normal-C1">), one of the actors gave a mini-<wbr>recital, about six minutes long, singing one cycle, Ravel s </span><span class="Normal-C8">Don Quichotte à Dulcinée</span><span class="Normal-C1">. &nbsp;This actor-<wbr>singer had a puny, thin, nothing voice with a weak, slightly constricted top  but he was a superb actor and although he had an English name, his French was perfect and beautifully inflected. &nbsp;His interpretation, musicianship, phrasing, and dynamics were exceptional. &nbsp;This remains the best, most enjoyably wonderful </span><span class="Normal-C8">Don Quichotte à Dulcinée</span><span class="Normal-C1"> I have ever heard, despite his lack of voice and despite my having heard it frequently, sung by singers with some of the greatest voices in the world, but lacking his artistry, including people on the list below. &nbsp;So for me the answer to what is really important is artistry and getting the musical and textual idea across to the audience. her vocal problems prevent her from being the one and only true love of my life... maybe).</span></li><li class="Normal-P2"><span class="Normal-C1">Eileen Farrell (The hugest, biggest, most powerful voice, very smooth and beautiful. &nbsp;I once heard her drown out the Chicago Symphony in Wagner;
